Jean-Paul Valley, also known as Azrael, is a complex figure in DC Comics lore, most notably remembered for his role in the "Knightfall" storyline where he temporarily replaced Bruce Wayne as Batman.
Valley's origins are deeply rooted in a clandestine religious order, the Order of St. Dumas. He was genetically engineered and rigorously trained from birth to become their enforcer, Azrael. This upbringing instilled in him a fierce, often brutal sense of justice.
When Batman suffers a debilitating injury at the hands of Bane, Bruce Wayne tasks Valley with protecting Gotham. However, the "System," Valley's ingrained programming from the Order, slowly takes over. He modifies the Batman suit into a heavily armored and weaponized version, becoming increasingly violent and unstable.
Valley's tenure as Batman is marked by extreme methods and a departure from Bruce Wayne's moral code. He defeats criminals but does so with excessive force, alienating allies like Robin and Commissioner Gordon. Ultimately, Bruce Wayne recovers and confronts Valley, reclaiming the mantle of Batman and beginning Valley's path toward redemption.
